ADS-B AND AVIONICS
What is ADS-B
WHAT IS ADS-B ?
ADS-B or Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast
ADS-B is the technology being implemented by the FAA to provide surveillance and improved situational awareness to both pilots and air traffic controllers. The FAA mandate states that all aircraft operating in current Class-C or Above airspace must be ADS-B Out equipped by January 1st, 2020. For the pilot, the two primary benefits come in the form of ADS-B In weather and traffic information.
Free weather information is transmitted from ADS-B ground stations. CONUS NEXRAD, regional high-resolution NEXRAD, METARs, TAFs, TFRs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, NOTAMs, winds/temperature aloft and pilot reports are continuously delivered to you in-flight via ADS-B In receivers.
An ADS-B ground station will send a traffic picture when it is ‘pinged’ by an ADS-B Out transponder, such as Stratus ESG or Garmin GTX. Individual traffic targets can also be received directly (air-to-air) from other ADS-B Out equipped aircraft. Equip your aircraft to experience the full potential of ADS-B traffic.
An FAA mandate requires all aircraft flying in current Calss-C and Above airspace be equipped with ADS-B Out before 2020. DON’T WAIT! Many of you are waiting until 2019 to comply with this mandate. However, more than 200,000 aircraft still need ADS-B installed. Not enough installation facilities will be available for the installation and will cause many aircraft to be grounded at the end of 2019. Call Twin Cities Aviation or better yet, stop in for an Estimate.
What do I need and what’s the cost ?
With many products and options, ADS-B is confusing. Whether you just want to meet the mandate of ADS-B Out or if you want a complete solution with IN and Out, Twin Cities Aviation has made it easier by narrowing it down to a few options.
We have found that the average ADS-B Installation is between $5,000 and $10,000 depending on what you would like to accomplish.
As a proud dealer for Appareo, Avydine and the Garmin GTX335/345 in association with RC Avionics, Twin Cities can accommodate your ADS-B needs in a timely and professional manner. Installations typically take from 3-4 business days once the product has arrived.
ADS-B on Cirrus Aircraft is different from most. In many cases, a Cirrus Authorized Service Center is the only facility that can mount and replace antenna’s in the authorized locations. With many installations completed, we have been able to put a few packages together and can quickly walk you through some of the options. For aircraft with Perspective Avionics, you may already be compliant or just need a Firmware Update and configuration of your current system.
Non Composite / Fabric aircraft will have a few more options depending on what’s currently in your aircraft. We typically see the price range starting a little lower on these aircraft and can quickly get a few options put together for what you want or need.
The best thing to do would be to fly in from 7:00am-3:00pm Monday – Friday. It would take us 15 minutes to determine what’s needed for your aircraft as we need to see what and where the antenna’s are. We can then get you the price of many different options based on what you want. If you don’t have the time to fly in, call or mail us and we can go over options and an estimate based on a few different antenna’s.
Stop in and say hello!
Don’t forget, If ADS-B is installed during your annual, you will save an extra 2 hours of labor from the installation!
IFR / VFR Certification
At Twin Cities Aviation, we proudly offer complete VFR and IFR certifications.
What are IFR and VFR Certifications ?
A VFR certification basically consists of certifying the aircraft transponder (mode A/C or mode S. A VFR certification is required every two years. The VFR certification should take less than thirty minutes and we can complete it while you wait when scheduled in advance.
The IFR certification consist of testing the aircraft static system, transponder, and certifying the altimeter and encoder. The IFR certification is required every two years. The IFR certification normally requires about three to four hours to complete. For your convenience, it’s best if you schedule your IFR certifications in advance.
